First Austrian Mediation-Weeks 2002
in Graz and Wolfsberg - A Pilot Scheme

The Research Program in Mediation at the law faculty of the University of Graz will launch with the "First Austrian Mediation-Weeks 2002 in Graz and Wolfsberg", a trendsetting and - in Europe in this extent unique - pre-operating study. The combination of practical applied mediation along with a comprehensive scientific study will produce new ideas in the field of alternative dispute resolution in Austria.

One aim of this project is to examine the real application range of mediation. Another aim is to present mediation to and customise its applications for the general public, as the lowly recognition is still the main weakness of mediation. In Europe, Austria leads the way concerning the legal regulation of mediation. For example, you will find regulations in the Marriage Act (EheG) as well as in the Environmental Impact Assessment Act 2000 (UVP-G 2000). Furthermore it is likely that even a bill referring to court connected mediation will be passed this year. However mediation itself is only known by an informed circlet.

That is where our pilot scheme starts. We offer parties the chance to solve their disputes, already pending with a court, via mediation, so that they have the opportunity to experience mediation as a practicable method. The collateral scientific study will analyse the chances of success as well as the applications of mediation. The results of this study should be published in autumn 2003.
