About Mariapfarr

Mariapfarr: Situated at the slopes of the Taurach valley, in the south-east corner of the province of Salzburg, in a region called "Lungau"; 2290 inhabitants.

Here are some facts making clear why Mariapfarr is well suited for staging a winter workshop:

• It is a calm and charming resort far away from heavy traffic
• It is pleasantly situated in beautiful alpine surroundings at an altitude of 1120 meters.
• It has a rich touristic infrastrucure of hotels, inns, guest houses and restaurants
• It is more likely to boast a nice sunny weak than any other place in Austria: the country's climate statistics rank Mariapfarr top in daily sunshine hours.
• It is a great place for engaging in all kinds of winter sports:
  • Its own, very varied alpine skiing center at Fanningberg features the world's longest six-man chair-lift (and places to rent the equipment).
  • There is easy access to a number of nearby skiing resorts, including the famous Obertauern region, which can be reached by car in less than 30 minutes.
  • Cross-country skiing is popular and exciting, with a network of routes guiding you through ravishing winterly scenery.
• There is ample support for a more leisurely approach to spending the afternoons:
  • Inns equipped with sun terraces where the long sunshine hours can be exploited (maybe recapitulating the morning lectures?)
  • An extended network of well-maintained footpaths for hiking (which will lead you to the inns mentioned above)
• It has a lot to offer to art aficionados:
  • Medieval art, culminating in the remarkable 13th-15th century frescos in the parish churches of both Mariapfarr and the nearby village of Weißpriach,
  • Somewhat more off the beaten tracks of sightseeing, abundant examples of local rural architecture, including impressive farm-house ensembles and carved and frescoed grainstores.
• Last, but not least, the local firebrigade have neat seminar facilities, which they let us use.
